Futtsu (Tokyo Bay side), Chiba
Just an hour’s drive from central Tokyo via the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, the coast of Futtsu is home to some fantastic spots for BBQs and camping on wild beaches.
Facing west across Tokyo Bay, these spots also offer beautiful sunset views.
We recommend visiting this coastline when the wind is coming from the north or northeast, so the water stays calm and inviting. For this reason, we often visit between late autumn and early spring. Sheltered from these winds, the coast can feel surprisingly warm on sunny winter days — and sunny winter days are quite common around Tokyo Bay.
We usually mark specific locations on our map, but this time, we’ve decided not to share the exact locations publicly at the request of some local residents. They’re concerned that increased exposure could attract too many visitors, even though these spots have always been deserted whenever we’ve visited. We’d like to respect their wishes and help keep these beautiful places peaceful and unspoiled.
Please note that a series of typhoons in 2026 has triggered multiple landslides along the coastal cliffs, making the coastal hike a little more challenging for families with young children. Adults and older kids should have no problem, but large piles of driftwood washed ashore by the typhoons are currently detracting from the coast’s natural beauty.
