Ippei and Janine

We are Ippei & Janine Naoi – Ippei is Japanese (from Tokyo) and Janine is Australian (from Melbourne).

We are photographers and designers involved with jewelry, graphic design and art direction, as well as helping out foreigners visiting off-the-beaten-path areas of Japan with our wealth of knowledge and experience. We have been based together in Tokyo since 2006, and we travel to Japan’s hidden gems frequently. When we’re not out and about, we run a photography agency, Ippei and Janine, and a contemporary jewelry company, Atelier Shinji Ginza.

Islands of Japan has been created over the years to give insight into the diversity and different attractions of Japanese islands.

We love the diversity of Japan and we love traveling to off-the-beaten-path places. We would like to encourage visitors to get off the tourist trail to discover the beautiful islands that Japan offers.

All photographs (Instagram | Flickr) have been taken by us (copyrighted – licenses available through Getty Images). If you would like any additional information about our photography, or to commission a photoshoot, please contact us. You can see some samples here.

For personal photography sessions, we specialise in cinematic storytelling style for families, couples, maternity, weddings (including elopement and destination weddings), etc. We also do lessons and photo tours. Please check out Spicer and Naoi Photography.

Our Service

We provide support for foreigners traveling to Japan who cannot read and/or speak Japanese. From planning to on-the-spot arrangements (consultation and translation/interpretation), we can support your travels so that you have peace of mind, and the best possible experience of Japan.

Our service is available with a starting fee of JPY10,000. This basic package includes our assistance to book your accommodation, advice on rental cars (for example, depending on the time of the year, we can often secure cars on Ishigaki for as little as JPY2,000 per day), booking nature guides/tours according to your preferences, and providing you with insider tips about your destination island. For domestic flights, please refer to this page here. We’re not a travel agency so we don’t take any commission by booking hotels/cars (you can pay directly to them). Our aim is to help you fulfill your expectations, using our wealth of knowledge and experience about these islands, together with our Japanese language skill. For extra service, we can arrange a more comprehensive package such as itinerary consultation for your entire Japan trip, consultation about photoshoot locations, etc. Please contact us for further details.

They could even help me by calling the car rental in Japanese when I got a flat tyre on Ishigaki! I can really recommend their service.[/lvca_testimonial_slide][lvca_testimonial_slide author="Theo" credentials="Australia"]My wife and I had very limited time on Miyako-jima but we were able to experience so many amazing things with great help from Ippei! We don’t speak Japanese but thanks to their arrangements, we even snorkeled at incredible spots that weren't on any guides or blogs![/lvca_testimonial_slide][lvca_testimonial_slide author="Robert" credentials="USA"]We were unlucky with the weather because of a typhoon approaching Iriomote but we had amazing adventures with all the help and tips that Ippei & Janine gave us. We’d have been stuck on the island if Ippei had not told us about the ferry cancellation. We’d have panicked because of our non-existent Japanese skill![/lvca_testimonial_slide][/lvca_testimonials_slider]
